1/16/18 - Elks Lodge Americanism Essay Contest

Members of the sixth grade class at Frankfort-Schuyler Middle School were honored with a lunch and awards ceremony on January 16 for their participation in the Elks Lodge Americanism Essay Contest.

The essay contest is a program of the Elks' Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee, and is geared towards promoting patriotism among students in fifth through eighth grades by allowing them to express their views and pride in America. The core theme of this year’s essay contest was "Why Veterans Are America's Heroes."

Each Frankfort-Schuyler sixth grader wrote an essay of up to 300 words on the topic and submitted them to the Ilion Elks Lodge. The contest starts with the local lodges, progresses through district and state levels, and ends with the naming of national winners at the Grand Lodge Session in San Antonio, Texas in July 2018. Essays are judged on originality, development of the core theme, writing mechanics and neatness.

Six students were presented with awards for winning at the local level of the contest and two will advance to have their essays compete at the district level.

  • 3rd Place - $15 Subway Giftcard: Madison Kelly and Angela Lyubezhanina
  • 2nd Place - $25 Amazon Giftcard: Sophia Vallese and Jimmy White
  • 1st Place - $50 Amazon Giftcard and will advance to next level: Molly Reid and Nela Cejvanovic

Representatives from the Ilion Elks Lodge visited the students to present the essay contest awards, speak about patriotism and deliver a lunch of pizza, salad and chicken wings for the students.
