ENL 1 & 2

ENL 1 & 2
1 Credit

ENL courses provide emerging and transitional level English learners in grades 9-12 with essential English language skills, balanced between social and academic language development differentiated for each student’s proficiency level. Reading instruction builds on the students’ native language reading skills and includes the foundations of reading as well as the development of comprehension skills, vocabulary, and learning strategies. Themes and topics are selected to support the grade-level academic curriculum as well as to appeal to students’ interests. Development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are integrated across each thematic unit. ENL 1, for grades 9 & 10, focuses on developing English skills across the curriculum, while ENL 2, for grades 11 & 12, prioritizes the ELA curriculum, preparing students to pass the ELA Regents exam.
